Last night I was back in North Tipperary to help launch Jonathan Meaney's campaign in the Newport electoral area. It was a great night and Jonathan made one of the best speeches from a young candidate that I have ever heard.

He spoke with passion about being from the area, about how he wanted to continue the good work of our local retiring Cllr. Sean Creamer and how he would never let the people down. Speaking as a young father, he stated that one of his main campaigns would be local amenities for local areas - this is something he is very strong on and has spoken about at length before.

Paddy's Day Festivities

Paddy's Day
Paddy's Day

My Paddy's Day festivities actually kicked off on the 15th with the parade in Thurles on Sunday, which was enjoyed by all. I then attended parades on the 17th in Littleton, Templemore and Roscrea. They were all fantastic. It was a pity I could not get to the parades in Ballina/Killaloe or Borrisokane but you can't be everywhere.

Saturday was a day off for me and badly needed! I attended the wedding of one of my best friend's, Gregory (Greg) from Barefield in Co. Clare. greg is one of the best people I know and has been a really good friend to me down the years since we met in UCC in 1993. He's the type of friend you can always rely on and they are the best. He made a great speech (nearly as long as mine at my wedding) as did his brother Ollie, who was best man and Shane McCarthy who was groomsman. So best of luck to him and his bride Nicki.

The Fight For Mallow Hospital

Mallow General Hospital
Mallow General Hospital

On Thursday I was in Mallow and was greated by the Mayor of the town, James Kennedy. James is a sound fella and was really helpful to me. I even got the official Mallow tie pin! We canvassed the town with some of the local members and the reception was good. Mallow is a very strong Labour town, given the Sherlock tradition. It slso has many great local activists and Cllr. Jerry Mullally has always been very helpful to me.

I have been up and running as the Labour Munster Euro candidate for some time now - many are saying that I went straight into it after our convention last July (but I can assure them I did take a short break). I am only the candidate though and very proud to represent my great party and I thought it was now time to give people an insight into my campaign team. We meet every week and I am always amazed by the volume of work that they all seem to get through.

On the Road with Cllr Seanie Lonergan

On the Campaign Trail with Seanie Lonergan
On the Campaign Trail with Seanie Lonergan

Yesterday I was campaigning in South Tipperary with Seanie Lonergan, who is our local Councillor in Cahir. Seanie is an excellent worker and effectively knows everyone in the area. I have evey confidence that he will get re-elected.

The response in the area was brillant. I know quite a few people around there and made many friends in college from that area. Many people knew me also from listening to me on Tipp FM and also Tipp Mid West radio.

South Tipp Hospital Meeting
South Tipp Hospital Meeting

Last night I attended the rally in Clonmel to maintain the services of South Tipp General Hospital. It was deja vu for me after being so heavily involved in the campaign in Nenagh. There was a large turnout at the meeting and I addressed the crowd about what I thought the HSE's plans were.

Every now and again you have to let off steam and thats what we just did in Barry's pub in Douglas on Saturday night. Here the campaign team along with local Labour members and many of my friends in Cork gathered for a chat and a few drinks. You could call it a campaign social evening!

I really enjoyed it and to be honest it was badly needed (:

The campaign team are working so hard, it is unbelievable and I really do see the benefits of being organised early in the campaign. We are going flat out for months now, so it was an opportune time to take some 'down time'.

Cork City - Campaigning Again

Posted on March 09, 2009 by Alan Kelly

Canvassing in Douglas
Canvassing in Douglas

I am spending a serious amount of time in Cork city and its paying off. The Cllrs and Ciaran and Kathleen Lynch are being really supportive to my campaign and there is a great sense of purpose in everything we are doing. Ciaran as my Director of Elections is obviously taking a great interest in getting the Cork organisation working for me and getting our voters out.

Cork is essential for me and I believe I can get a good vote here. I'm constantly meeting more and more people that I know, have worked with or went to college with. Its great to have sucha good knowledge of the city and the people - most of all I ireally enjoy canvassing in Cork.
