HSE Lacks Transparency: It is Time to Stand Up for Nenagh Hospital
Posted on December 20, 2008 by Alan Kelly
Nenagh Hospital as we know it is under threat.
The fact is that the HSE have over a year ago completed the infamous 'Teamwork' Report into acute services in the Mid West and they are still refusing to publish it. This beggars belief. They are refusing to publish a report that will decide the very future of how our hospitals work, yet they have put in place 'reconfiguration' teams to implement the recommendations of this as yet unpublished report.
There is no transparency in this and it is simply an exercise to stifle debate and push through Mary Harney and Brendan Drumm's ideologically driven policies and beliefs. This is certainly undemocratic and shows an attitude towards the public that leaves a lot to be desired.

2008 National Conference Address
Posted on December 01, 2008 by Alan Kelly
Comrades, the world has changed since we were together last November.
And what has happened? After decades of living with the smug arrogance of free marketers there is a new dawning for the left. As we witness the collapse of greed, its philosophers and their disciples there is a huge reawakening to the simple truth that people are first, that the human person is central and that the market and economics exist to serve society.

Education cuts reflect this government's lack of Vision
Posted on November 26, 2008 by Alan Kelly
Over the last few weeks, I have spoken to teachers, members of boards of management and parents and they cannot understand why this government are picking on children. Fianna Fail promised to cut class numbers to 20/1 in 2002 and to 24/1 in 2007 in their election manifestos and here they are increasing them to 28/1. We have the highest class sizes in the EU and this Government have shown that they are willing to make children and their teachers suffer for their complete mismanagement of the economy. Despite their promises, they are targeting the most vulnerable.

Ireland's place is at the heart of a strong Europe
Posted on October 27, 2008 by Tom Duke
I am really concerned that the national conversation on Europe is leading us away from the EU. Disappointment at the loss of the Lisbon referendum is being replaced by creeping defeatism in the pro Europe camp while the personalities associated with the 'No' campaign are feted like celebrities.
Those of us who believe in Ireland's place at the heart of a strong Europe should stop apologising for our existence in the face of the articulate and well heeled Eurosceptics hell bent on derailing our European journey. We need to be clear about our vision for a cohesive stable EU in light of the rise of new global superpowers.
