South Tipp Hospital Meeting
South Tipp Hospital Meeting

Last night I attended the rally in Clonmel to maintain the services of South Tipp General Hospital. It was deja vu for me after being so heavily involved in the campaign in Nenagh. There was a large turnout at the meeting and I addressed the crowd about what I thought the HSE's plans were.

Every now and again you have to let off steam and thats what we just did in Barry's pub in Douglas on Saturday night. Here the campaign team along with local Labour members and many of my friends in Cork gathered for a chat and a few drinks. You could call it a campaign social evening!

I really enjoyed it and to be honest it was badly needed (:

The campaign team are working so hard, it is unbelievable and I really do see the benefits of being organised early in the campaign. We are going flat out for months now, so it was an opportune time to take some 'down time'.

Cork City - Campaigning Again

Canvassing in Douglas
Canvassing in Douglas

I am spending a serious amount of time in Cork city and its paying off. The Cllrs and Ciaran and Kathleen Lynch are being really supportive to my campaign and there is a great sense of purpose in everything we are doing. Ciaran as my Director of Elections is obviously taking a great interest in getting the Cork organisation working for me and getting our voters out.

Cork is essential for me and I believe I can get a good vote here. I'm constantly meeting more and more people that I know, have worked with or went to college with. Its great to have sucha good knowledge of the city and the people - most of all I ireally enjoy canvassing in Cork.

With Martin Coughlan
With Martin Coughlan

I spent much of yesterday with Cll Martin Coughlan in Ballincollig. Martin is a tru Labour man. He has huge integrity and is a really sound fella.

this was the first time I had canvassed in Ballincollig and again I have to say the reception was great. People liked the fact that I was a young candidate. They liked what I had to say about investment and jobs. They really appreciated what I was saying about education and broadband.

Continuing the Work in Limerick

Campaigning with Jan
Campaigning with Jan

I was out again in Limerick with Jan O'Sullivan, Cllr. Tom Hannon and Cllr. Joe Leddin as well as a number of their colleagues. As the only Mid West candidate, I feel a real sense that the people of the area want to have someone from their end of the constituency representing them in Brussels. It is coming across in spades!

New Ideas For Innovation
New Ideas For Innovation

Over the last couple of months I have been working on a concept to help stimulate jobs. It is time to be pro-active and I have been looking at ways to promote innovation and give people with new ideas a voice. With this in mind I developed a website called www.newideas.ie. This site is aimed at encouraging new ideas, new concepts, new thinking that will help stimulate new enterprises that will develop the Irish economy and create jobs. This site is dedicated to providing a platform for people with innovative ideas or concepts that are currently finding it very difficult to get support. It will also look at the finance and infrastructural needs of businesses that are trying to get into or compete in sectoral areas where there will be future economic growth.

Campaigning in Waterford's Red Square
Campaigning in Waterford's Red Square

I spent last Saturday in Waterford on the campaign trail. I was joined by my colleagues Brian O'Shea T.D, Mayor Jack Walsh and Cllr. Seamus Ryan. We campaigned throughout Waterford again and and got a great reception.

The Cllrs in Waterford are excellent and very popular as is Brian O'Shea, who has been a fantastic servant to the people of Waterford. I have the height of admiration for him.

Eamon Gilmore Visits Nenagh

Posted on March 01, 2009 by Alan Kelly

With Eamon at Nenagh Office
With Eamon at Nenagh Office

Our party leader Eamon Gilmore visited Nenagh on Friday (27th), where he was welcomed by a large selection of the party membership. He was particularly pleased to see his old trade union colleagues Frank and Ger Lewis, with who he worked for many years. It was great for the membership to meet with Eamon again and he certainly has shown his support to the constituency by the frequency of his visits.

While in Nenagh, we did a walkabout and got a great reception. He was an instant hit with the public as usual. Eamon was briefed on the issues facing the town, particularly unemployment, the future of the hospital and cutbacks in education.

Labour Doing Well in the Polls!

Posted on February 28, 2009 by Alan Kelly

My Campaign Poster
My Campaign Poster

The recent polls have been a huge boost to the Labour party. The recent MRBI poll had us at 24%, while the latest Irish Independent/Millward Brown IMS Poll has my party at 22% and this was followed by the Sunday Business Post/Red C poll, which puts Labour at 22%. All these polls are showing a huge surge of support for the Labour party - many of them in double digits. There are many reasons for this surge and chief amonsgt them has been the performance of our party leader Eamon Gilmore. He has been head and shoulders ahead of everyone else in the Dail over the last year and this is bearing fruit now. Eamon is a honest, sincere and passionate politician, who has conviction and great leadership qualities. Also, the policies adopted by my party over the last number of months have been in tune with the public, whether on the banking crisis, the budget cuts, healthcare policy, education policy or the lack of innovation from this Government in order to stop the loss of jobs and /or create new opportunities.

Mid West Conference Feb 09
Mid West Conference Feb 09

On Thursday (Feb 26th), we held a get together of Labour party members, supporters and other organisations and voluntary groups in the Mid West in the Marriott hotel in Limerick. A very large crowd attended to here myself and Jon O'Sullivan speak either side of our party leader, Eamon Gilmore.

There was a wide range of people at the meeting to here Eamon give a fantastic speech, which espoused the need for strong leadership in order to turn this country around. He also spoke of the need for the Government to take on many of Labour's economic policies (as they have been doing) in order to stimulate growth and help save jobs.
