IRELAND MUST FOLLOW FINLAND AND MAKE DIGITAL HISTORY

Posted on July 02, 2010 by Alan Kelly

Following the news that Finland has made broadband access a legal right for every citizen, I believe Ireland must follow their example and make broadband available to every Irish home and business.

Finland made digital history when it became the first country in the world to make broadband a legal right for every citizen.

From 1 July every Finn will have the right to access to a 1Mbps (megabit per second) broadband connection.

What we need now is an urgent review of Ireland’s broadband strategy. Ireland lags way behind the rest of Europe when it comes to broadband and the problem is worst in rural areas.

EU COMMITTEE REPORTS ON GOVT'S HANDLING OF EU DELL MONEY

The report submitted by the select group of MEP's who visited Limerick to examine the handling of the Dell EGF funds have confirmed all the issues I have highlighting.

The Government’s handling of the EU retraining money for former Dell workers has now proven beyond doubt to be shambolic.

ACT NOW OR PUT YOUNG FARMERS AT RISK

I took the opportunity during the Labour Party National Conference at NUI Galway, to highlight the grave situation facing farmers if the future of the Common Agriculture Policy (CAP) is not addressed now.

The clock is counting down towards 2013, and with every minute that passes, the situation for Irish farmers becomes more critical.

Agriculture is at the very core of rural life in Ireland and CAP 2013 is critical to ensuring future generations of farmers do not turn their backs on the industry.

We must encourage young farmers to get involved and provide them with a viable career path in farming.

€87k BILL FOR TIPPERARY CARER 'TOTALLY RIDICULOUS'

Posted on April 13, 2010 by Alan Kelly

Carers Association
Carers Association

I am appalled at the Governments treatment of a Tipperary carer following demands she repay almost €87,000.

The woman who has been in receipt of carer’s allowance for looking after her husband is now being asked to repay the money which the Dept of Social and Family Affairs are claiming she was overpaid.

Kelly said “It is quite simply beyond belief the way this lady is being treated. She was providing an invaluable service to the Tipperary community and she is being hit on all sides by a Government that clearly has no idea what is it doing.

Just last week we had billions being poured into the banks and here we have a horrible example of the blatant hypocrisy that exists in Ireland.

I am delighted to announce the creation of new jobs for Nenagh after HKPB Scientific revealed plans to open a facility in the town.

HKPB decided to bring the new facility to Nenagh after I personally intervened to draw their attention to the facilities on offer in the town.

I am delighted to have attracted a company of this quality to Nenagh. They are creating the type of jobs we need, high-value, export led jobs that will boost the entire regional economy.

These jobs will bring money into the community and will have a very positive effect for all businesses in the town and the local area. It’s a massive boost for Nenagh and it comes at a time when good news is in short supply.

Time to Investigate M7 Workers Employment Conditions

Posted on February 03, 2010 by Alan Kelly

Supporting the M7 Workers Fight for Fair Play
Supporting the M7 Workers Fight for Fair Play

I am calling for a full investigation into the working conditions of workers on the new M7.  This arises following receipt of a number of complaints from former skilled workers who were paid the hourly rate of a general operative in breach of The Wages Act 1991. This in particular relates to hundreds of workers who have been let go off the site in the last six months.

The complaints come from former employees of Coffey Construction and relate not only to rates of pay but to a number of issues which include payment of a flat rate for overtime hours worked and incomplete contracts of employment. These are in breach of Labour laws and practices.

Towards the end of my recent US Trip, I had the pleasure of being asked to be the guest speaker at the Tipperary New York GAA Dinner DAnce. The event honoured the 1974 Tipperary New York team that won the championship and there were many well known faces on it. I met many old friends at the event from across the county which went on into the early hours of the morning.

Fighting For EU Support for Dell Workers

With Dell Workers
With Dell Workers

For eight months now I have been working with the DELL Workers Group on trying to secure them a better deal following the withdrawal of the DELL company from much of its plant in Limerick. This has had a huge impact on the economic well being of the Mid West as a result of the thousands of job losses amongst families in Limerick, Tipperary, Clare, Kerry and Cork.

Coming Back Home

Posted on June 11, 2009 by Alan Kelly

Back Home in Portroe
Back Home in Portroe

I got back to my home village of Portroe early on the 9th to be met by a huge crowd of supporters and well wishers. I have to say it was one of the most special nights of my life. Before that I was met by a large convey of cars at the county bounds near Limerick to welcome me home. We proceeded in a convey through Nenagh and out then to Portroe. The village of newly elected Cllr. Jonathan Meaney, County hurling manager Liam Sheedy (and goalie Darren Gleeson), the brillant musician Gerry O'Connor and of course Aoife Kelly, our Rose of Tralee. It is a small parish but one of the most united in the country and I'm exceptionally proud to come from there.
