Good News for Irish Beef Farmers - Kelly

Issued : Tuesday 6 January, 2015

Local TD Alan Kelly and Minister for the Environment. Community and Local Government has welcomed the announcement  that the US market has been opened to Irish beef for the first time in 16 years.

"This is a huge opportunity for Irish beef farmers given the scale and value of the market in the US. this is great news for Irish Beef Farmers.

“Ireland is the first country in the EU to secure this access since America shut off beef exports from the EU following the BSE controversy in the late 1990s. The decision to allow Irish beef to reenter this lucrative market  represents a confidence in the Irish beef production sector and in the quality control systems that are in place here.

“The US market is now the highest value in the world for farmers. It is estimated that this move will be worth between €50m to €100m to Ireland this year alone, with huge potential for further growth in the following years.
