HAVE YOUR SAY TODAY

Today is the day to have your say. Regardless of your political persuasion I would encourage all of you to vote. It would be expected that in this election, the most important in a generation, that people will think very hard before they consider their vote. Typically many young people would have voted the same way as their parents and they would have voted the same way as their grandparents and it would have all gone back to civil war politics.

I hope that day is gone. This time the electorate have a choice. There are parties putting across different values and different messages. I come from the party that I believe best espouses the values of decency, fairness and community spirit. The party that values people – Labour.

A lifelong member and born into the party, I certainly hope that today is the day when the people of the country and North Tipperary have their say and that they chose Labour. The country needs renewal. We have despairing parents because their sons and daughters are emigrating, we have despairing families because their house is in negative equity and their job is on the brink. We have old people frightened that the banks will eat up what is left of their pension and their healthcare service.

Now is the time for change. The country is on the brink and someone must step forward who can unite. Labour stood back in 1919, but now we must step forward and be a voice to the vulnerable, be the voice that demands economic reforms to get people back to work and demands an end to senseless cuts in local services.

Labour is the party of work and we will get people back to work. We will do it by investing in people, in ideas and supporting those who can generate wealth in this economy. That is the Labour way.

Whatever else you do today, please vote. But when you consider who you vote for, ask yourself – whose values do you identify with? We need a strong, stable, fearless and ambitious government to get us through this. There is light at the end of the tunnel. It is time to end Fianna Fail rule so I would ask you to vote Labour and if you are from Tipperary North/Offaly South – vote Alan Kelly No.1
