Latest HIQA report into Áras Attracta disappointing - Kelly

Commenting on the latest HIQA report into Áras Attracta, Labour Party Health spokesperson, Alan Kelly TD, has said that it is clear that residents are still not receiving adequate care.

Deputy Kelly:

 “We were all shocked and disturbed by the revelations of extremely poor treatment of vulnerable residents in Áras Attracta when they first came to light nearly three years ago. 

“It is deeply disappointing to hear that the HSE have not been upholding their own national policy on safeguarding vulnerable people at risk of abuse.

“The HIQA inspectors found that management had failed to improve the lives of those living in Áras Attracta or provide them with transition plans to move to community based accommodation. This is not good enough.

“Every person who uses disability services in this country is entitled to expect and receive supports of the highest standard and to live in an atmosphere of safety and care. This is particularly important for people who are vulnerable and whose families have entrusted them in thew care of professional staff.

“Three years on, life should be getting better for residents and their care situations improving rather than deteriorating. The HSE should use the little time they have left to turn this situation around for residents in Áras Attracta and live up to their own standards expected of them through their own HSE policy.”
