Minister Alan Kelly Welcomes GAA Link with JobBridge Scheme

Issued : Wednesday 18 January, 2012

Local Minister Alan Kelly has welcomed the news that the GAA is to provide up to 200 internships on the Government’s JobBridge initiative.

“I am delighted to hear that the GAA are coming on board with this valuable initiative. JobBridge provides young people with an opportunity to explore their passions and interests, develop new skills, gain invaluable work experience and ultimately enhance their employment prospects”.

“Offering a variety of internships in IT, marketing and promotions and fixtures programming, as well as the opportunity to work in one of Ireland’s oldest sporting institutions, I’m sure these internships will be of interest to a lot of jobseekers. Placements are available to work in Croke Park as well as in provincial councils and county boards across Ireland”, continued the Minister.

“The GAA has sadly lost a number of its up-and-coming players to emigration. It is the job of this government to put in place a long-term jobs strategy to stem this haemorrhage of young people from our communities and we are about to launch a comprehensive targeted jobs and training strategy to ensure that jobs are at the centre of everything we do”.

The Minister concluded: “Schemes such as JobBridge and the Jobs Initiative are clear signs that we are taking this task very seriously. I will be continuing to work with my colleagues in government to ensure practical schemes can be put in place to not only offer training, but also stimulate the creation of local jobs”.
