IRELAND MUST FOLLOW FINLAND AND MAKE DIGITAL HISTORY

Following the news that Finland has made broadband access a legal right for every citizen, I believe Ireland must follow their example and make broadband available to every Irish home and business.

Finland made digital history when it became the first country in the world to make broadband a legal right for every citizen.

From 1 July every Finn will have the right to access to a 1Mbps (megabit per second) broadband connection.

What we need now is an urgent review of Ireland’s broadband strategy. Ireland lags way behind the rest of Europe when it comes to broadband and the problem is worst in rural areas.

BAILOUT DEAL A DISASTER FOR IRELAND

Posted on November 30, 2010 by Alan Kelly

Ireland and EU
Ireland and EU

This Bailout deal announced by the Government following negotiationswith the EU and IMF is 'a disaster for our country'.

I've met with the EU Economics Commissioner Ollie Rehn twice during the negotiations and I've spoken to Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia twice as well. The 5.8% interest rate is penal and beyond what I or any other Irish MEPs were led to believe.

The European Parliament votes tomorrow on the allocation of funds for Waterford Crystal workers and I am calling on the Government to publish a detailed plan on how they will use the funding.

It is no secret that serious mistakes have been made by the government in dealing with the European Globalisation Funding for the former Dell Workers.

Coming Back Home

Back Home in Portroe
Back Home in Portroe

I got back to my home village of Portroe early on the 9th to be met by a huge crowd of supporters and well wishers. I have to say it was one of the most special nights of my life. Before that I was met by a large convey of cars at the county bounds near Limerick to welcome me home. We proceeded in a convey through Nenagh and out then to Portroe. The village of newly elected Cllr. Jonathan Meaney, County hurling manager Liam Sheedy (and goalie Darren Gleeson), the brillant musician Gerry O'Connor and of course Aoife Kelly, our Rose of Tralee. It is a small parish but one of the most united in the country and I'm exceptionally proud to come from there.

Thank You

Becoming an MEP
Becoming an MEP

A big thank you to the people of Ireland South for choosing me to represent you in the European Parliament. It is a great honour and a privilege. It was a very enjoyable campaign and one that I will always cherish. I want to thank the thousands of people voted for me. I will do my best at all times to ensure they get the best representation at EU level, whether they are workers, fishermen or farmers. I also believe we can learn an awful lot more from Europe in a progressive way and I intend to demonstrate that.

Paddy Downey Convention Cashel

Paddy Downey Convention
Paddy Downey Convention

Tonight I attended the Labour party's Cashel convention that selected Cllr. Paddy Downey as our candidate. Paddy is a fine candidate and a great local community activist across a broad range of activities.

The convention, which had approximately 100 people in attendance was chaired by my colleague Sean Sherlock TD. Senator Phil Prendergast, Cllr Darren Ryan and Cllr Maureen O'Donoghue also spoke at the convention. Many people spoke of their admiration for Maureen as she is standing down from Cashel Town Council after many years of service for the Labour party.

Its very important that we win back our seat in this area and I'm 100% behind Paddy and I look forward canvassing with him over the coming months.

On the Campaign Trail with Seanie Lonergan
On the Campaign Trail with Seanie Lonergan

Yesterday I was campaigning in South Tipperary with Seanie Lonergan, who is our local Councillor in Cahir. Seanie is an excellent worker and effectively knows everyone in the area. I have evey confidence that he will get re-elected.

The response in the area was brillant. I know quite a few people around there and made many friends in college from that area. Many people knew me also from listening to me on Tipp FM and also Tipp Mid West radio.

New Ideas Campaign and Conferences

New Ideas For Innovation
New Ideas For Innovation

Over the last couple of months I have been working on a concept to help stimulate jobs. It is time to be pro-active and I have been looking at ways to promote innovation and give people with new ideas a voice. With this in mind I developed a website called www.newideas.ie. This site is aimed at encouraging new ideas, new concepts, new thinking that will help stimulate new enterprises that will develop the Irish economy and create jobs. This site is dedicated to providing a platform for people with innovative ideas or concepts that are currently finding it very difficult to get support. It will also look at the finance and infrastructural needs of businesses that are trying to get into or compete in sectoral areas where there will be future economic growth.

Campaigning in South Tipp and with James Heffernan

Campaigning with James Heffernan
Campaigning with James Heffernan

I was campaigning all over South Tipp and Limerick recently. I got a great reaction in my home county and I had time to meet up with many friends. Tipperary is a very proud county and I'm certainly gettting a very good response throughout. Many people want to see someone from Tipp. I'd be the second person to represent the county in Europe if I was elected, TJ Maher was the first. South Tipp has great local Labour County Cllrs in Seanie Lonergan in Cahir, Darren Ryan and Gabrielle Egan as well as Denis Landy in Carrick on Suir. We also have Mark Hogan and Billy Bourke in Clonmel as well as Maureen O'Donoghue in Cahir and Jim Drohan in Carrick. Finally, of course there is my colleague in the Seanad Senator Phil Prendergast. Tipp SOuth is very important to the Labour party because it is where the party was founded in CLonmel in 1912 and we've had great representatives there in Michael Ferris, Sean Treacy, Richard Stapleton and William O'Brien.

South Kerry Euro Campaign Launch

South Kerry Campaign Launch
South Kerry Campaign Launch

I had my South Kerry campaign launch in Sheehan's pub in Killorglin on Friday, Feb 6th. It was a great night that began with the selection convention for the local area that put forward John Sheehan as the local Labour party candidate. We then launched my campaign in Sheehan's with some old friends of mine from Fexco and Gulliver, who I used to work with in Killorglin. Also present were the local Labour party members and the 'extended' family of my in laws. We certainly made an impression. Killorglin is one of my favourite towns in Ireland and I always enjoy being out and about there.
