Sanction of a further 250 new Garda recruits

Posted on April 02, 2015 by Alan Kelly

I welcome the announcement last week of the sanctioning of a further 250 new Garda recruits by Minister Brendan Howlin.

A total of 550 Gardaí will have been recruited by this Government between September 2014 and 2015. This is in addition to the €27.5 million invested in new Garda vehicles between 2012 and 2014, marking a massive increase on the €4.8 million provided for in Budgets 2009-2011.

The latest 370 new Garda vehicles have come on stream since the start of this year. This announcement also comes as extremely positive news for the town of Templemore.

I have announced a €10.1million rural development fund for Tipperary.

The funding forms part of the Government’s €250 million funding for the Leader element of the rural development programme.

LEADER funding will be used to support sustainable economic development projects for rural communities ranging from tourism, agri-food and other business activities.  These money will be targeted at tackling social inclusion, rural isolation as well as increasing the capacity of rural communities to participate in economic development. The exact nature of the projects chosen will be based on ideas that emerge from the communities themselves. An expression of interests process will begin shortly.

Community Tourism Diaspora Initiative

Posted on March 11, 2015 by Alan Kelly

Tipperary County Council is operating a Community Tourism Diaspora initiative that was launched recently.

Community Events will be considered for funding – however they must have a strong focus on the Diaspora and therefore attract overseas visitors to the county / locality. They also must have the potential to be repeated. It can include sports clubs hosting overseas teams, music, cultural or business events involving overseas visitors.

Applicants who received funding fro...m Fáilte Ireland’s Regional Festival Fund 2015 are not eligible to apply for funding.

Alan St. Mary's Girls Tipp Enterprise Award 2015

I was delighted to attend the inaugural all county Tipperary Student Enterprise Awards in LIT Thurles today.  I was very impressed with the all the hard work and dedication shown by all the teams at the envent.  The event is a brilliant platform to give students an idea of how a business operates and the exceptionally high standard of projects is a testaments to several months of hard work by all involved, students, their teachers and their families.

I am pictured with the winning team Mary's Masterchefs from St. Mary's Secondary School, Nenagh at the Tipperary Student Enterprise Awards - Aisling Sheedy, Sorcha Nagle , Jade Corcoran, Roisin Taplin and Niamh Dolan.

Funding for Six Tipperary Festivals

Posted on March 03, 2015 by Alan Kelly

Funding has been allocated to six Festivals in Tipperary, Terryglass Arts Festival, Spleodar Festival in Nenagh, Feile Brian Boru in Ballina/Killaloe, Glen of Aherlow Festival, Rock of Cashel Festival and Clonmel Junction Festival.

Committees across the country work extremely hard organising festivals, and I'm sure the allocation of funding will be very welcome to all involved.

Local festivals are central to the Government's plans to develop the tourism industry. 2014 was a great success for Irish tourism and regional festivals and events across the country played a big part in that success.     The festivals sector has shown remarkable resilience over the last few years, which shows the resourcefulness and skills of the people and communities involved in the festivals sector.

Congratulations to Nenagh's Billy Fitzpatrick who got a lifetime service award for his service to the Labour Party at our national conference this weekend. Billy is a great man and and good friend so I was so delighted to present him with his award. We had a few locals down to support him too! Also congratulations to Sean and Mary Doyle originally from Nenagh but now living in Dun Laoghaire who also received awards.
